My materials allow me to paint in 3 dimensions. That’s what I do. I’m a painter-sculptor. Before I start I will make some simple sketches or pick out specific colors or shapes. Then in a meditative state the details form in my mind’s eye. I’m often driven to carve beauty out of an imperfect world by combining natural pigments from the earth with clay, straw, mica, kiln glass, and metal patinas.
Sweeping lines and bold shapes are brought together through textures that are built up and carved back. It all comes together in the warm embracing arms of the Kimono shape. The final part of the process is to make the collar that crowns and brings the Kimono to life.
